A hotel conceived and constructed to capture views of the northern lights - every window in every  guest room faces to the northern horizon. And, just to be doubly certain, when you check in you will be offered an Aurora Alarm - a mobile phone which will receive text alerts from the Geophysical Observatory in Sodankyla.  If the conditions are promising then you are alerted, at least until 1am in the morning. But don't rely on this alone, conditions change quickly and this is not an exact science - part of the fun is to keep one eye on the skies yourselves.

The hotel is at the heart of Luosto hamlet and the standard of rooms and facilities is really high, considering how remote you are. The Aurora Hotel is effortlessly cosy and welcoming, as well as being intimate with only a maximum of 60 guests on any given night. The spacious rooms are spread over three floors, with plenty of dark wood and warm colours used to create a restful ambiance. All come with their own sauna, and some have their own fireplace. Those who expect more luxury can opt for the Superior rooms - they have their own sleeping area and living room.

A new addition, and attached to the main hotel, are 10 new glass-roofed arctic view rooms. Modern and well-equipped, these promise to bring you even closer to the frozen Lappish landscape and dancing skies - an experience akin to staying in a glass igloo elsewhere. But better.

With the luxuriant furnishings and cosy motifs flowing through in to the communal areas, the restaurant prepares a different set three-course dinner every night, but there is always the option to go off-piste with the à la carte menu. Local ingredients are very much to the fore, fish from the lakes, meat from the forest are transformed into delicious dishes that restaurants in Helsinki would be proud to serve. Breakfast is a typical Scandinavian buffet. The hotel lobby and bar just off the restaurant provide a pleasant area for socialising, a place where you can enjoy an evening just sitting by the open fire...waiting for your Aurora Alarm to beep.

In gorgeous little Lousto there are only a handful of other shops, restaurants, cáfes and hotels. Surrounding are frozen fells and white forests, the nearest major town being several hours drive away. In Luosto you are bang in the middle of the Aurora zone, as you stand as good a chance of seeing the Northern Lights here than anywhere else in the Arctic Circle. The remoteness and size of the village ensures that it maintains its Finnish charm. The many activities on offer will  get you out in to the backcountry - across frozen lakes, past white-statue trees and over fells covered in deep powder - although the added bonus of Luosto is that it is also a small ski resort. Without enough runs to warrant inclusion as a ski destination for Different Snow - three lifts and seven pistes - but for those who wouldn't mind a touch of downhill skiing along with the huskies, snowmobiles and reindeers, then this is perfect.
