Newer purpose-built hotels and lodges rarely manage to create an elusive atmosphere and of this, there are several crass examples in Finnish Lapland. We avoid these. However, historic buildings adapted from a former use, somehow create a homey, convivial character and also have a relationship with the location. Welcome to Hotel Korpikartano, a former school, situated on the banks of the frozen wilderness lake of Menesjärvi, close to the Lemmenjoki National Park. It's intimate, it's comfortable, it's in a remarkably beautiful and remote spot and it's a firm favourite for Different Snow. The owners, Anne and Timo, are wonderful hands-on hosts, no doubt greeting you personally when you first arrive, and it soon becomes immediately apparent that they are passionate about their wilderness home.

The 28 guest rooms can be described as characterful (typically Finnish, with light wood interiors), but without pretense - certainly not fancy. It was a boarding school, after all. They are all slightly different from each other and are spread between the main hotel building and a separate annex. Each has its own shower and toilet and, somewhat redundantly, a TV. Those on the lake side command a slightly higher price, but the views over the wilderness are worth the upgrade. There are also some apartments, with fridges and microwaves - though we remain unsure as to where you would buy provisions from around here? Or, why?

The restaurant stills feels like the schools canteen, and it serves hearty, home cooked meals. Anne wants us to stress that the food is un-complicated and traditional.....we simply found it very tasty. You can indulge in an array of fine wines at the hotel’s wine-tasting room after browsing the selection in the wine cellar. There is also a bar and you can wrap up warm and take your drinks on to the Terrace, with uninterrupted views across frozen Lake Menesjarvi and the fells. Two saunas are available for guest use within the hotel building, and a traditional log wood sauna can be found by the lake shore.

One of life's special moments is just waiting for you at Hotel Korpikartano - as you sit next to open fire in the small Lappish hut on the lakeside, when suddenly the clouds open and the northern lights dance above the frozen lake, with (seemingly) only you as the audience. Well...at least that happened to us when we were last there.
