    The Arctic Explorer

Duration: 6 days

This itinerary gets you far off the beaten track, in to Eastern Lapland - equivalent to turning right when everyone else is turning left. Flying in to Ivalo and then immediately heading even further north by road, you leave civilisation behind and establish base in either Inari village or on the remote shores of Menesjärvi. You are in the heart of Sámi country, where lakes are vast and the northern lights flicker strong, well away from light pollution.

There are options when it comes to choosing a place to stay. The new Aurora Resort in Inari has the best hotel rooms for miles (and miles, and miles..etc) around - each with its own private sauna and stunning views across frozen Lake Inari. Stay here and you enjoy all the convenience of being in a small village - a few souvenir shops, artisan cafés, modest restaurants and Siida Museum - the national museum of the Sámi people. If you're travelling on a budget and have romantic notions of (modest) lakeshore cabins, then there is the nearby  Inari Holiday Village. Nothing fancy...but cosy, homey and great value. For the ultimate wilderness experience then continue another 20 miles up the road and stay at  Korpikartano - a converted boarding school, now idyllic remote lodging.  That little bit of extra effort is well worth it.

If you want to extend at the beginning or end of your holiday Kakslauttanen is nearby - spend a night in a glass igloo, sleeping under the northern lights? But there is more to Kakslauttanen than just this - great activities, snow hotel and some of the best cabins (with hot tub) in Finland. Talk to us if you wish to incorporate this Arctic resort.

Our tailor made approach allows you to design your own holiday. This suggested six day itinerary features a mix of the many activities on offer...and these can be swapped around to suit. There is a weekly programme of excursions and adventures operated - all focused on getting you out in to the wilderness -  and we can pick and choose.  Want a more leisurely pace? Feel like turning up the adventure-dial all the way to intrepid? Fine...we can adjust to suit. If you want to add more days in Lapland, perhaps switching accommodation - no problem! We could just as easily cull a few days from the itinerary if needs must...but having made the effort to get this remote, this far north, this would surely be a shame? All we would say is that everything is subject to availability and these are small hotels. Flights get busy. We would recommend that you get in contact and begin the process of booking with us as soon as possible.

Day 1

Arrive in Ivalo airport, from where you are transferred to either Inari village (Aurora Resort or Inari Holiday Village) or Korpikartano.

The first night may be for relaxing after your journey...although we suspect you'll be taking a stroll after dinner on to a frozen lake hoping that the northern lights will make an appearance?

Day 2

Snowmobile safari, with ice fishing included. This can be organised from either Inari or Korpikartano - same activity, different lakes.

The remainder of the day is left free. You may wish to pick up some snowshoes or cross-country skis and head out on the backcountry tracks by yourself. If you need an introduction to cross-country skiing, then this can be arranged early on during your holiday.

Day 3

Excursion to visit a local  Sámi family and learn about their relationship with the reindeer. From Korpikartano you could use snowmobiles to get to the homestead.

Head out on snowshoes in search of the northern lights from a remote spot.

Day 4

A free day. If you are in Inari you should certainly take a walk to the Siida Sámi Museum, and from Korpikartano you could take the excursion

Read a book, spend the day walking, snowshoeing or skiing along the trails - or just relax in the sauna. There are plenty of activities on offer if you feel active.

In the evening, head out again looking for the northern lights on a snowmobile excursion.

Day 5

Today you are introduced to the huskies. Dog sledding safaris head out from Korpikartano and from Inari you could have a three-hour adventure  or head down to Wild Spirit Wildlife Park.

Day 6

Transfer back to Ivalo airport for your flights back home.

As a guide, the cost of this itinerary would start from £1,395 per person - but it all depends on where you choose to stay and how many activities you wish to include. The other major factor is your travel dates, as we all know flight prices can vary according to availability.

Included in our packages will be the flights to Ivalo from the UK, five nights accommodation in either Inari Holiday Village (cheapest), Korpikartano or the Aurora Resort (similar), most meals, cold weather clothing for the duration of your stay, expert local guides and the activities.
