Just look at the images.....they tell you all you need to know. It's an ice-bound ship, serving as a hotel in the winter month in a remote frozen fjord.

They bring the Noorderlicht, a 120 foot Dutch schooner which first set sail in 1911 and now operates summer expedition cruises in the region, to this particular spot every February and let the ice freeze around it. We use it as the end-goal and focus for overnight and multi-day trips from Longyearbyen and catching your first sight of the red hull when you drop in to Tempelfjod is a memory which will stay with you forever.

It's a cosy night on-board. There are a grand total of 20 beds in 10 well-equipped cabins, hot & cold water, 220 V power supply, a shower and toilets. The ship has two lounges, with of polar books to read, and a oh-so-important little bar. Not a lot else. The ship’s resident chef prepares delicious meals every day, including three-course dinners, freshly baked cakes and bread.

The ship is usually in place for mid February and stays until the ice begins to melt in May, but this will always depend on what's happening with the weather each year. There are day trips as well as overnight trips from Longyearbyen to the Ship in the Ice.

The Ship in the ice is frozen in the Tempelfjorden about 35 miles northeast of Longyearbyen. You can reach the Ship in the Ice either by snowmobile or dog sledges and it is only possible to stay on one of these guided safaris.

The Ship in the Ice is sold as part of a package from Longyearbyen - there are multi-day snowmobile and dog sledding expeditions which feature the hotel and the price (full board) is within the cost of the safari.
