Situated on the "Hill", the imaginatively-named Spitsbergen Hotel commands wonderful views over Longyearbyen, the Lars glacier and the Longyear glacier. This is the local 'old dame' hotel - you’ll find historic photographs, old maps and newspaper clippings adorning the walls as you stroll along its corridors.  The hotel was constructed in 1947 (but has been refurbished since!), originally built as the accommodation and dining block for employees at Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani and the grand interior and architecture made it Longyearbyens' showpiece construction of the time. Nowadays, it's a cosy and comfortable hotel - elegant, but without ever being plush.

There are 88 rooms and a few suites - of which the 'Store Norske' and 'Bergmester' are decorated using authentic historic artefacts. There is also a well-stocked library, fitness room and sauna. 'Funktionærmessen' is the French-inspired hotel restaurant, featuring those fantastic views of the town and Hiorthfjellet on the far side of the Adventfjord.
