This sample itinerary includes an overnight at the Ship in the Ice, which could be replaced - or added to - with a night at Isfjord Radio or Expedition Lodge. Whatever you choose, getting out to the tundra wilderness on a snowmobile and by dog sled is a must.

Day 1

Fly to Spitsbergen, via the Norwegian mainland. Catch the airport shuttle to your central hotel in Longyearbyen. First night at leisure - we have plenty of restaurant recommendations.

Day 2

Head out on an introductory dog sledding safari to the Bolterdalen. Afternoon at leisure in Longyearbyen and head out in the evening to Camp Barentz for a wilderness dinner under the stars.

Day 3

Spend the day relaxing in Longyearbyen, exploring the few shops and small galleries. In the early evening, meet you guide at Trapper's Hotel and head out on a overnight snowmobile safari to the Ship in the Ice. Overnight on-board the Nooderlicht.

Day 4

Wake up in Templefjorden and spend the day out in the tundra, snowmobiling your way back to Longyearbyen for the late afternoon.

Day 5

Take an excursion out of town to explore the ice cave in the Longyear glacier.

Day 6

Another day, another activity. Spend the day with the huskies on a longer, full day safari or head out to the east coast on a snowmobile.

Day 7

Airport shuttle bust to the airport and fly back home, via the Norwegian mainland.

Prices vary, depending on when you travel (dark winter is cheaper than the light winter), which hotel you choose in Longyearbyen and the specific activites you choose.
