In BA you’ll find plush hotels, budget hostels, achingly-trendy design properties and, our favourite, stylish converted and restored townhouses, now boutique hotels. The accommodation scene is vitalized and varied, the equal of Europe’s more fashionable cities.

Buenos Aires has lots of great barrios, each worthy of exploration. However, if you’re only staying for a few days you’ll probably want a hotel in the thick of it, so we instinctively focus on several ‘Centro’ neighbourhoods, close to Jorge Newbery airport.

Retiro is a historical barrio, a mix of upscale European flair and downtown Latin dive. It suits us well. There is a plaza at the start of Calle Florida, a very popular pedestrian street, and from here many of the main sights are within easy reach, making it a great place from which to start a walking tour past gorgeous mansions and important buildings. This area is also within easy walking distance of the Puerto Madero, the port area with many trendy water-front restaurants.

Another of our favourite barrios is Palermo, where you’ll find boundless cafés and restaurants, bars and nightclubs, parks, museums and galleries, shops and artisanal markets. It’s a vibrant bohemian mecca, made up of lazy cobblestone streets where new businesses continue to spring up in the old Spanish-style houses and converted warehouses. Wander the streets and blend in with the hipsters.

Alternatively, Recoleta is the most exclusive barrio of Buenos Aires, akin to the upscale districts of Paris. Elegant tree-lined boulevards meander past chic cafes, cosmopolitan boutiques, and art galleries.
