Most people choose to stay down in the beautiful village / town of San Martin de los Andes, picturesquely nestled on Lake Lácar and sitting between high volcanic peaks. It's a 20-minute drive up to Cerro Chapelco each day and these transfers can usually be organised by your hotel.

San Martin de los Andes is large enough to be buzzing, yet small enough to retain a certain alpine charm which is further enhanced by the low rise Swiss-style timber architecture. It’s a hotchpotch of arts and craft boutiques, ski shops, restaurants, and chocolate shops. For those looking for a little pampering, we feature a couple of opulent five star hotels and then also have access to several more modest four and three star hotels. Most sit in the centre of town, which has the advantage of having all the restaurants and shops on your doorstep. Unlike Bariloche only a very small percentage of the accommodation overlooks the lake.

Your other option is to stay adjacent to the Cerro Chapelco resort in the ski village of Las Pendientes. Okay, the accommodation is ski-in ski-out, but only to the tiny Las Pendientes ski area. You could actually ski-in from Cerro Chapelco but it's still a five-minute drive every morning to get back to the slopes you need to be on. The main disadvantage of staying up here is that there is very little to do in the evenings.  These on-mountain options also tend to be rather pricey relative to San Martin de los Andes lodgings.
