Base elevation: 500 metres

Top elevation: 680 metres

Number of lifts: 5

Number of runs: 15

Access: Ivalo is the nearest airport, 16 miles away. Flight from UK via Helsinki or Enontekiö.

Saariselkä is the northernmost ski resort in Europe and the lifts are on the slopes of two adjacent fells - Kaunispää and Iisakkipää. Lifts open at 10am and close at 5pm, with some extended hours to provide evening skiing during the high season. Seven of the 15 slopes are illuminated.

A ski bus links the village and the ski base area...and the top of the mountain - it takes just 10 minutes to get between the two.

The lift pass covers both fells. It takes the form of a reloadable smart card, which costs €6 for the physical card itself.

Children under seven (wearing a helmet) ride free in the company of their parents. 'Children' are then up to 12 and 'Seniors' are over 64.

Indicative prices are as follows:

1 Day (Adult) GBP 30
1 Day (Children & Senior) GBP 22
5 days out of 6 (Adult) GBP 95
5 days out of 6 (Children & Senior) GBP 64

It's a smaller resort, so the equipment choices are not quite as extensive as elsewhere. But that's no problem - what they have is new and good quality. They appear to have a strong affinity with Atomic skis and boots - indeed, you can try Atomic’s very latest skis for free on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3–5pm.

The rental shop, which opens when the lifts are operating, is beside the slopes and you can leave your gear with them overnight. They have cross-country skis, telemark skis and snowscoots for hire also.

Indicative prices are:

1 day ski, boots & poles GBP 26
5 days ski, boots & poles GBP 70
1 day helmet GBP 8

The ski school is small, friendly and professionally operated. It's a rather intimate experience...which is ideal if you're learning to ski! English-speaking abilities is not an issue at all.

Note - they close the ski school if the temperatures have dipped below -25 degrees. Fair enough, really.

They offer private lessons and group classes, in blocks of 90 minutes. However, they do also offfer one hour 'introduction to snowboarding, telemark or cross-country' sessions.

There is an especially good special ski school just for children - Werneri Ski School . The minimum age for joining a lesson is five 5 years old, for snowboarding seven years old.

Indicative prices for private adult lessons are:

private lesson for 90 minutes (1 person) GBP 56
private lesson for 90 minutes (2 persons) GBP 90
Private lessons for 5 days (1 person) GBP 180
