They get a lot of snow in the Ylläs region - the season officially mid December and sees you all the way through until June! Obviously, we'd be cautious about a skiing holiday at either extremity, but an Easter - even post-Easter - break is a reasonably safe option. For the first half of the season the lifts open at 10am (until end March), but this comes forward to 9am later and then then they close at 5pm (early in the season) or 7pm (later).

The ski mountain itself is a rather strange set-up - each side of the mountain is owned and operated by completely separate companies. Fortunately, they are on good terms (most of the time) and the ski pass covers the whole mountain. However, the lift infrastructure, ski schools, equipment hire...etc is all local to whichever side of the mountain you are on - from Äkäslompolo it is owned by 'Ylläs-Ski Oy' and at Ylläsjärvi it's "Sport Resort Ylläs". This will make no practical difference to your experience, both are professional and experienced ski companies, but it is worth knowing.

The ski passes come in the form of a Key Card - a smart contactless system which makes navigating the ski lifts just that bit easier. There is a €7 fee for the card itself.

Children under 6 with helmets ride on the lifts for free when accompanied by a parent.

We can also include a shuttle bus pass as part of your ski pass - it would cost an additional €21 for the week and the bus links the various cottage neighbourhoods, village centres, shops, restaurants and ski base areas.

Following are indicative prices for the forthcoming season, though it should be noted that they also offer family discounts - two adult tickets at a normal price, children -25% on week-long passes.

1 Day Low Season (Adult) GBP 30
1 Day Low Season (Children & Senior) GBP 20
1 Day High Season (Adult) GBP 32
1 Day High Season (Children & Senior) GBP 22
1 Week Low Season (Adult) GBP 115
1 Week Low Season (Children & Senior) GBP 72
1 Week High Season (Adult) GBP 135
1 Week High Season (Children & Senior) GBP 82

Where you get your equipment from depends on which village you are staying in - Sport Resort Ylläs  in Ylläsjärvi Village, and Ylläs Ski in Äkäslompolo village.  In either instance, the standard of equipment is high and the process of getting kitted up remarkably efficient - computerised, professional and delivered by friendly English-speaking staff.

Two different ski schools on either side of the mountain, although lessons can take you all over the hill. There are private lessons and then also group lessons for adults and kids, which operate from Monday to Thursday (four sessions).

They also offer telemark, snowboard and free-riding lessons.

Indicative prices are as follows:

Group course for 4 days (1 child) GBP 90
Private lesson for 90 minutes (2 persons) GBP 82
