The friendliest place in Hakuba - Double Black Hotel is a Canadian style timber lodge with a Japanese twist, deep within Wadano forest. There’s a shuttle laid on to take you to Happo village and the other mountains beyond.

The 22 Western style rooms (double, twin or triple) all have en-suites, and there are communal onsens downstairs, as well as an atmospheric dining room and lounge bar with vaulted ceiling, where you can chose from a drinks menu as long as your arm and enjoy delicious Japanese fusion tapas well into the evening. Breakfasts are good, too, with a choice of cooked Western or Continental, and probably the valley’s best coffee. There’s a large communal TV and children’s play room, as well as washing, drying and tuning facilities.

In our view, Double Black has an unbeatable communal ambience; conversely it probably isn’t the best choice if you like to tuck yourself away after a day’s skiing.

A room at Black Diamond Hotel will cost from about ¥20,000 (£115) per room per night during the lowest season, rising to ¥33,000 (£190) for a Suite during the peak periods.
