Few would disagree that the warmth and authenticity of a traditional ryokan is hard to beat....but it’s also nice to have English-speaking hosts, a spongy Western bed and a few familiar dining options (although at Hifumi we’d go Japanese every time!). Mr Maruyama and his family have struck that delicate balance perfectly at Hifumi Hotel, a small ryokan within the hubbub of Happo village.

You’ll be relaxed in no time thanks to simple décor, dashes of greenery, traditional architecture, food made with love, and a peaceful onsen whose pure alkaline waters are sure to cleanse away aches and pains. Deluxe rooms, which sleep up to four people, have private rotenburo (open air hot springs).

The family runs a shuttle service to the ski lifts - it’s a five to 10 minute walk – and offers lovely dinners well worth booking in for.
