Phoenix is the new kid on the block amongst the slope-side hotels of Wadano, with a 15 room boutique hotel and a number of two and three bedroom chalets skirting the forest. The hotel rooms are a lovely blend of East and West and couldn’t be cosier, with traditional futons made of pillowy lamb’s wool, rich, earthy colours, and mellow lighting. Chalets offer more space, sleeping up to eight people and featuring large living areas and inviting modern bathrooms.

You’ll enjoy peaceful forest walks, easy access to the slopes thanks to the complimentary shuttle, and delicious food and wine – including notably good options for veggies. The hotel has a steam sauna, Japanese baths and massage service, as well as a characterful pocket-size bar which opens at four – no doubt music to your ears if you like to start the evening with a post-ski tipple.

The Phoenix is in Wadano. To walk to the ski lifts of Happo One would take 10 minutes - but why walk when the shuttle bus stops just next door at the Tokyu Hotel. Head down in to the village for more restaurants and bars in 15 minutes, but there are several restaurants tucked away more locally.

Let’s start with the hotel - it ranges from about ¥18,000 (£105) per room per night during the lowest season for a Compact Room (not ensuite), to ¥55,000 (£320) for a Superior Room during the peak periods.

The chalets begin at circa ¥64,000 (£370) per night for a two bedroom chalet during the low season, rising to about ¥129,000 (£750) for a three bedroom chalet during peak periods.
