Age-old traditions and stories lie deep within the Edo walls of Shirouma Sou, one of Hakuba’s oldest ryokans, which has recently been modernised without losing its soul. Located near the ski lifts that will whisk you up Happo Mountain, it’s a great choice for both location and charm.

In true Japanese style, you’ll be treated like royalty and encouraged to make yourself at home by Toshi and her family. Rooms sleep up to five in the Japanese way, with dining areas that convert into a sleeping area for futons at night. Some of the rooms have wonderful views over the mountains, and a couple have private showers; but why not follow tradition and enjoy the soothing onsen, instead? Delicious breakfasts and kaiseki (multi-course) dinners are prepared by Toshi herself, and there are always a few Western options available too.

The ryokan is in the village - a five minute walk from the lifts, which are 350 metres away. Shops and restaurants are all around.

Indicative prices range from about ¥21,000 (£120) per room per night during the lowest season, with no dinner included. There are several room categories, taking you through to Deluxe Rooms, with Mountain Views, which would cost circa ¥40,000 (£235) per night during the peak periods, with kaiseki dinner included in the rate.
