Beyond the skiing: Spending time in Tokyo is a must - it is the world's most exciting city. Kyoto is the beating cultural heart of the nation. Get off the beaten track and stay in a ryokan or capsule hotel, visit markets, discover traditional Japanese arts and explore modern otaku culture.

Duration: two weeks

Koya-san is a hilltop home of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. It's a beautiful retreat, made even more so in the deep snow, and you spend several days up here staying in a shukubo - a traditional yet humble Japanese temple lodging, eating vegetarian food with the monks. Once a state of inner-calm has been achieved, it's time to head to Nozawa Onsen - Japan's prettiest ski and onsen resort. This itinerary begins in Kyoto and ends up in Tokyo, with startling contrasts immediately apparent.

This itinerary could, of course, be reversed - zen then ski, or ski then zen? We couldn't decide which worked best - your call!

Day 1

Arrive in Kansai Airport and transfer in to Kyoto. Check in to your hotel or ryokan and spend the remainder of the day recuperating after your journey.

Days 2 & 3

Two days to explore Kyoto. We have excursions on offer, or you could head out under your own steam and explore the temples, shrines and palaces.

Day 4

Head up to Mount Koya, a hilltop Buddhist retreat. Check in to your shukubo (temple lodging) and relax in to the monastic way of life.

Days 5 & 6

Exploring Koya-san and learn about Zen Buddhism.

Day 7

Come off the mountain and take the train to Nozawa Onsen. Check in to your ski accommodation and explore the mountain hot spring village.

Days 8 - 11

Four days skiing in Nozawa Onsen. You may wish to take an excursion to visit the snow monkeys in Jigokudani on one of the days.

Day 12

Transfer back to Tokyo, where you check in to your central hotel. Explore Tokyo by night - a stark contrast to Nozawa Onsen and Koya-san!

Day 13

Full day in Tokyo - exploring on your own or heading out on one of our excursions. A souvenir shopping and sightseeing day.

Day 14

Transfer to Tokyo Haneda or Narita Airport for your flights home.

Obviously, cost depends on which accommodation you choose, how many excursions and activities you want to book, whether you wish to include ski hire and lift passes…etc. An indicative lead-in price for this two week itinerary would be circa £1,450 (¥254,000) per person, based on 3 or 4 star accommodation (low season), transfers & lift passes.
