Kyoto has many options - beyond all the temples and outside of the historic districts, it's a large Japanese city like any other. There are small guest houses, luxury hotels, and pretty much everything in between and here we’ve listed a handful of our favourites, but we have plenty of other suggestions if none of these take your fancy.

At some point in your itinerary we'd recommend bedding down in a ryokan to experience Japanese hospitality at its best. Ryokans are typically small Japanese inns with an emphasis on comfort, relaxation and delicious cuisine – often in the form of multi-course ‘kaiseki’ dinners and fresh, eye-opening Japanese breakfasts. Ryokans provide a privileged glimpse into how the Japanese do things, but if you prefer it the Western way one thing’s for certain: wherever you stay in Kyoto, the service will almost certainly be gracious and efficient – just another thing to love about it.
