From the moment you step inside Gion Hatanaka Ryokan you’ll be wrapped up in traditional Japanese hospitality. Mr Tanaka is warm and amiable, immensely proud of his lovely little hand-me-down guesthouse and determined that you have a relaxing, genuine experience.

Located in temple-dotted Higashiyama – historically a mountain retreat for locals – Hatanaka benefits from a quiet location near the skinny lamp-lit streets of Gion. There are just 17 rooms – 12 in the main building and 5 on the hillside which accommodate larger groups of up to four. In-keeping with tradition, there is a lovely little bathing onsen for you to enjoy, and painstakingly prepared dinners (which often feature tasty local ‘matsubagani’ or snow crab) will be served in the privacy of your room.

Gion Hatanaka is a great choice for atmosphere, intimacy and tranquility, just a few minutes’ walk from the action.
