You couldn’t get more central than Hotel Granvia, which manages to balance a location in the thick of it with pleasantly serene rooms. The Granvia has a prime spot within the striking development housing Kyoto Station – a city in miniature, with endless entertainment, shopping and dining.

The hotel itself has a slick, international feel, with 535 rooms and suites sleeping up to three people. Each is smart and spotless, but we particularly love the Choriku Suite for its big city views. If you can’t have Choriku never fear: there are plenty of other places to enjoy the views, such as the Sky Lounge restaurant and the glass walkway connecting the hotel’s north and south towers.

You can walk or catch the train to points of interest quite easily, and back home there’s an indoor pool, fitness centre, Jacuzzi and steam room to keep you occupied - but annoyingly they do charge extra. There are 12 dining options.

  • Bath Tub
  • Concierge Service
  • Currency Exchange
  • Front Desk
  • Gym
  • Hair Dryer
  • Laundry Service (valet)
  • Panoramic Views
  • Room Service (24 hrs)
  • Safety Deposit Box
  • Satellite/Cable TV
  • Sauna
  • Spa Treatments
  • Steam Room
  • WiFi (free)
  • Swimming Pool

The Granvia is part of Kyoto Station - one of the Japan’s largest buildings, incorporating a shopping mall, movie theater, Isetan department store, and several local government facilities under one 15-story roof. It’s an amazing building. From here transport connections are (obviously) excellent, though the main sights in Kyoto are several kilometres away - all within a 15 minute train ride. Iconic Kiyomizu Temple is a 20 minute bus or taxi ride away.

Prices at The Granvia in Kyoto start from about ¥26,500 (£150) per room per night for a Standard Room. It’s more expensive over weekends and then there are many room categories, with Choriku Suites being considerably more expensive. But worth it.
