We suggest a few days in Kyoto to truly appreciate its wealth of offerings. Major sights such as Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Temple), Nijo Castle and Kiyomizu-dera are relatively easy to navigate with a guidebook, an understanding of the transport network and good shoes, and you can while away hours happening upon charming pockets of the city.

A rewarding place to start is Sanjo-dori, the city’s main street, which is littered with tea and coffee stops, museums and shops. The Higashiyama district is best for impressive shrines and temples, from Ginkaku-ji in the north to Sanjusangen-do in the south. The cobbled streets of the Gion district are atmospheric day and night; our favourite neighbourhoods after dark are Ponto-chō for its little alleyways lined with taverns and Kiya-machi for a good range of restaurants and bars. We can arrange a private dinner with a geisha or, more affordably, a kaiseki dinner whilst a meiko performance takes place.

The main sights in Kyoto are rather spread out - you'll need to become well acquainted with the train network to tick off all the main temples. Alternatively, we have bike tours which offer a  great way to cover the distances, even in winter. If you would like to get a little more involved and try your hand at traditional crafts, we can arrange cookery courses and also a number of experiences through Kyoto’s Women’s Association.
