Geisha are viewed as symbols of Japanese culture and elegance throughout the world. Traditional entertainers, they are highly-respected, learned women who have studied traditional arts including dance, singing and music for many years under careful guidance. As Kyoto is the home of the geisha, and the cultural heart of Japan, it’s a wonderful place to learn more about these mysterious icons. Maiko are trainee geisha who live and work in the ‘flower towns’ of the city, locally known as ‘hanamachi’. Ganko Nijo-en, a charming authentic restaurant near the Kamogawa River, hosts regular performances by the maiko, and invites you in for a privileged glimpse. As you watch the 40-minute performance, you can enjoy a delicious sushi and kaiseki meal prepared at the restaurant.
