Paying homage to Nozawa’s Austrian links, Hotel Haus St Anton has bags of character. Mikio Katagiri – a former Olympic skier – and his wife are the most knowledgeable hosts you could wish for, and their hotel is small and homely, with just sixteen rooms. It has a rustic edge, which to us makes it all the more loveable. Bathrooms are small, but en suite.

After a long day on the slopes you can retreat to the warm, cozy bar and feel right at home – but you’ll enjoy tongue-tingling food in the friendly and rather communal dining room, as well as jams, juices and ice cream from the in-house shop. There are two onsens at St Anton, but you’ll be in the centre of town so you’ll also have plenty of choice on your doorstep.

  • Bath Tub
  • Front Desk
  • Onsen
  • Safety Deposit Box
  • Ski Lockers
  • Television
  • Wireless Internet (Free) (Public Areas only)

The hotel is in the central village area, in amongst the restaurants and bars. It only takes four minutes to walk to the ‘Yu Road’ travelling walkway, which then takes you to the base of the Hikage ski area. As it happens, the owners also own and operate a ski rental shop and cafe/restaurant at the base of the Hikage Gondola and, as a guest of Haus St Anton, you will get discounts on meals and drinks, plus if you rent your gear from their shop you can leave it up on the hill each night and not have to carry it back to the hotel.

Based on two people sharing, prices tend to start from ¥31,000 (£180) per room, per night.
