Whilst the public areas have a contemporary twist, all the rooms at Kawamotoya are resolutely Japanese with tatami mats and futon bedding. There are various sizes of room (accommodating from two to six persons), with the premium rooms on the 4th and 5th floor having great views over the village and the mountains. Each has a toilet and basin, but its only the Deluxe Rooms that have an en suite shower. In keeping keeping with the Nozawa tradition, guests bathe in the in-house onsen....or one of the 13 free public onsens in the village.

This ryokan also has a fine restaurant, not serving just Japanese fare - they describe it more as "an infusion of European and Japanese cuisine using fresh local produce." All we know is that we once had a really excellent meal here, the service being particularly memorable. A Western or Japanese breakfast is available daily and is included in the nightly rate.

Kawamotoya is located on the edge of Nozawa Onsen village, about a five minute walk to the central area and a 10 - 15 minute up-hill walk to the Yu Road travelator. There are many restaurants to tempt you on the walk between the hotel and the village.

Based on two people sharing, indicative prices range from ¥15,000 (£90) per night during low season for a Standard Japanese Room without any meals, rising to ¥39,000 (£305) for an ensuite Deluxe Japanese Room, with breakfast and dinner included, during Peak Season.
