The lofty heights of Mandarin Oriental’s lobby make for a memorable entrance, its floor to ceiling windows revealing panoramic views of the metropolis beneath. Then you realise that this privilege extends to your room, too. And prepare to be continually impressed: everything from the sky-high spa to the melt-in-the-mouth Michelin cuisine is the best in the business.

Design-wise, it’s earthy, uncluttered and crisp – think New York loft with a few nods East. There are 179 rooms and suites kitted out with the obligatory technology and gadgets, but, despite its size, the hotel is incredibly peaceful – perhaps the result of its height, which makes you feel as though you’re soaring above the chaos below. When you’re ready to hit the streets, you’ll appreciate the location in the Nihonbashi business and shopping district, within walking distance of Tokyo’s main shopping and nightlife areas as well as Tokyo station.

The Mandarin Oriental is in East Tokyo - the closest JR stations on the Yamanote Line are Tokyo and Kanda Stations. There is a Metro Station even closer, Mitsukoshimae. This area is one of the most upmarket in Tokyo - famous departments stores, the head offices of major corporations, spotless streets, luxury buildings with small boutiques. Both the Imperial Palace and Ginza district are only a walk away.

One of Tokyo’s best, if not the best, five star hotels. Prices range from about ¥58,000 (£335) per room per night for a Deluxe Premier Room, with breakfast, up to ¥140,000 (£810) for one of the Suites.
