An excellent base for everything from sightseeing to shopping, Villa Fontaine Ueno is a small (by Tokyo standards) 12 storey with around 180 rooms. The Ueno district is a great place to be, with shopping, museums, temples and a pleasant park on the doorstep, and easy access to the subway and JR line. Breakfast is offered, but there is no restaurant in the hotel, so it’s all about exploring Tokyo’s exciting food scene in the evening. The road opposite has a small supermarket and cafes selling sushi, bento and various other options if you don’t feel like going far.

The rooms at Villa Fontaine are comfy, clean, and quite spacious, and the staff are courteous and helpful. If you can live without the luxuries of the grander hotels, this place offers a great little bolt hole from which to explore.
