Skotel proudly boasts that it is New Zealand's highest hotel, nestled as it is in the tussocks at the upper end of Whakapapa village. With only a 10 minute shuttle transfer to the ski field required, but with the convenience of the (small) village on your doorstep, it’s ideally located. This is the budget option, for those without the deeper pockets or desire to stay at the nearby Chateau Tongariro.

Most notable in the styling is the predominantly wood décor. On the property are  a friendly restaurant (an à la carte menu ) and bar, spa pools and lounge with a welcoming fireplace. Most accommodation boasts stunning mountain views. Ski facilities on site include a ski shop and ski drying room.

The entry level rooms can accommodate three people - one single, plus bunk beds. You have to make use of a shared bathroom facility , although the rooms do have a wash basin. In this section of the hotel – regrettably called the ‘backpackers wing', though we’d argue it’s one notch above this – you’ll also find a shared kitchen and TV lounge (with pool table).

Set away from the hotel proper, there are some cabins which can sleep up to six people (a queen sized bed and two sets of bunk beds). These have kitchen, with stove tops, microwave and fridge freezer, lounge area with arm chairs, TV and a dining table.
