The ‘Different’ Japan Itinerary

Furano - Hakone - Tokyo

Duration: 10 / 12 days

So everyone goes to Niseko! Where can you go that has as good, perhaps even better, snow and bestows the off-piste bounty of the region? Somewhere with a real flavour of Japan? A resort in the heart of Hokkaido, which affords you access to Asahidake, Tamamu and other powder havens? Furano, of course, is your answer.

Now throw in some Japanese countryside under the shadow of Mount Fuji, a stay in a ryokan with onsens and kaiseki dinners and then top it off with time in the planet's most fascinating and exciting city.

Day 1

Fly from your home country to Hokkaido Island in Japan.

Day 2

You are met at Sapporo Chitose Airport and take a transfer to Furano, in the dead-centre of the island. Settle in to your accommodation and relax after the long flights.

Days 3-7

Skiing or snowboarding in the central Hokkaido region. Furano itself is worth a day or two of your time and you should certainly look to visit the Asahidake ropeway for one day. The balance of your time can be spent staying local, or heading out to nearby resorts such as Kamui Ski Links, Tamamau or Sahoro.

Day 8

Transfer back to Sapporo Chitose Airport and fly down to Tokyo. Make your way from the airport directly out to the Hakone district and check in to your ryokan. Enjoy a kaiseki dinner and relax in the onsen.

Day 9

Spend the full day exploring the Hakone region - lakes, rivers, mountains and thermal activity - and then take the train (the bullet-train, if you'd prefer) in to central Tokyo. Check in to your hotel and enjoy your first night amongst the frenetic streets.

Day 10

A full day at leisure, to explore Tokyo at your own pace.

Day 11

Make your way to one of the Tokyo airports and fly home.

Obviously, cost depends on which accommodation you choose, how many excursions and activities you want to book, whether you wish to include ski hire and local backcountry guides, etc. An indicative lead-in price for this 11-day itinerary would be circa £1,998 per person, including on moderate accommodation (mid / low season), transfers, lift passes and economy class flights from the U.K.
